Why Chalong

Chalong is the crossroads of southern Phuket. Roads to Rawai and Nai Harn, Kata and Karon, Phuket Town and the airport all meet at Chalong roundabout. That means fast delivery to any hotel in the south — and if you’re staying nearby, it’s easy to pick the bike up yourself.

Approximate riding times: Rawai and Nai Harn 10–15 minutes, Kata and Karon 15–20, Phuket Town about 20, Patong about 25.

What’s near Chalong

• Chalong Pier — boats and speedboats to Racha, Coral and Phi Phi islands. You can leave the bike in the pier car park for the day.
• Wat Chalong — Phuket’s most important Buddhist temple. Cover shoulders and knees.
• Big Buddha — the climb starts in Chalong. It’s a steep switchback, so ride two-up only on 150cc+. Route in “Phuket scooter routes”.
• Markets and cafés along Chao Fa Road — where locals eat, with lower prices than by the beaches.

Roads around Chalong

• Chalong roundabout is busy. Traffic drives on the left and goes clockwise; give way to vehicles already on it.
• Chao Fa Road (west and east) runs north to Phuket Town as two parallel streets. Expect daytime traffic; mornings are easier.
• In the rainy season (May–October) low roads around Chalong flood after heavy downpours — don’t ride into deep water.

Timing and traffic

Chalong is the transport hub of the island’s south: at the roundabout and on the main road there are many cars and trucks at rush hour, so keep your distance and take it slowly in the first minutes. In the daytime and evening the roads to the pier can be busy. For a relaxed ride choose early morning, and move into the left lane in advance when joining the highway.
