Which scooter to choose in Phuket
For most visitors a 155–160cc scooter is enough. It fits any side street, parks easily by the beach and takes the hills to Karon, Kata and Nai Harn without trouble. The differences between models are small but real:
- Honda Click 160: the lightest and cheapest, the best choice for beginners and short rides;
- Honda PCX 160, Yamaha NMAX 155 and the newer Yamaha NMAX 160: comfortable maxi-scooters for two people and all-day rides;
- Yamaha Aerox 155: sporty and lively, for riders who want character;
- Honda ADV 160: high ground clearance for bad roads and longer routes.
Rental prices and rates
Scooters start from 300 ฿ per day. For a week or a month the daily price drops: the weekly rate beats the daily one from about the fifth or sixth day, and the monthly rate is often half the daily price. Scooter or motorcycle?
On an island where most roads are tarmac a scooter is easier than a motorcycle: automatic, storage under the seat, simple controls. For mountain roads and long two-up trips with luggage look at maxi-scooter rental, and for experienced riders there are big bike rental.
A checklist before you set off
Spend five minutes on a check before your first ride: do the brakes work on both wheels, do the headlight, brake light and indicators work, does the tread look normal, is there enough petrol, are the mirrors adjusted. Photograph the bike from all sides, note any existing scratches and point them out at handover. The helmet should fit snugly with the strap fastened. If anything looks doubtful, tell us at once and we will swap the scooter.

Which scooter should a beginner rent in Phuket?
The Honda Click 160: it is the lightest, has a low seat and modest power, so it is easier to learn on. For two people, a PCX 160 or NMAX 155 is a better fit.
How much is a scooter for a week?
The weekly rate is lower than seven daily rates: see exact prices by model on the prices page. The longer you rent, the cheaper each day is.
Do I need a license for a 160cc scooter?
Yes. In Thailand scooters over 50cc require a category A license or an International Driving Permit with that category.
