Getting around Karon

Karon is a long beach between Patong and Kata. Hotels stretch for several kilometres along the sea and up the hills, and shops, restaurants and the neighbouring beaches are a long, hot walk away. By scooter, Kata is 5 minutes, Patong about 15 and Promthep Cape about 25.

Which scooter for Karon

Staying near the beach and riding mostly around Karon and Kata? A light Honda Click 160 is enough. If your hotel is up a hill, or you plan to ride two-up to Patong and the south, go for the Honda PCX 160 or Honda ADV 160 — the climbs between Karon, Patong and Kata Noi are steep.

Roads around Karon

• Karon–Patong hill is a steep climb with bends. Keep left and never overtake on a corner.
• The Karon temple roundabout is where the main streets meet. Take care in the evening when the market is on.
• The Big Buddha road is a steep switchback. Ride it two-up only on 150cc or more, and come down slowly without sudden braking.

• Karon Viewpoint (the “three bays” view) — 10 minutes south, looking over Kata, Kata Noi and Karon.

Timing and traffic

In the morning and afternoon the traffic along Karon beach is calm, and in the evening it gets denser around the markets and restaurants. The climbs start where the road heads towards Kata and Patong: do not stop on them and keep some power in reserve. The best time to ride is early morning and sunset, when there are fewer cars and the heat eases.
