Why you need a scooter in Rawai
Rawai and Nai Harn make up the southern tip of Phuket. It’s an area of villas and condos where people stay for months, with shops, cafés, beaches and gyms spread out across the area. There’s almost no public transport and taxis are scarce, so a scooter is how everyone gets around.
Staying for the winter? Read “Monthly scooter rental” — monthly rentals cost much less per day.
Which scooter for the south
For daily trips to the shop and the beach, the Honda Click 160 is enough. If you often ride two-up or head to Phuket Town and the airport, take the Honda PCX 160, Yamaha NMAX 155 or Honda ADV 160: more storage and steadier on the main roads.
What’s nearby
- Promthep Cape — the island’s classic sunset viewpoint. In high season, arrive early; the car park fills up.
- Nai Harn and Ya Nui beaches — calm water, good for swimming with kids in the dry season.
- Nai Harn Lake — a loop path for evening runs and walks.
- Windmill Viewpoint between Nai Harn and Promthep.
- Rawai seafood market by the pier — buy fish and have it cooked next door. Boats to Coral and Racha islands leave from the pier.
Roads in the south
- The climbs to Promthep and Windmill Viewpoint are steep — two-up you need 150cc or more.
- The road through Chalong is the main route to Phuket Town and the airport; expect traffic at the Chalong roundabout during the day.
- In the rainy season (May–October) low roads around Rawai flood. Never ride through water deeper than 20–30 cm — the engine can stall and repairs are expensive.
Timing and traffic
The roads of the south are quieter than in the central resorts, but they are narrow and twisting, especially near Nai Harn and Yanui beaches. At weekends and at sunset many cars gather near the viewpoints and beaches and the parking fills up. Ride carefully at dusk: lighting on some stretches is weak. For regular trips to the shops and the beach a light scooter is handy, and two-up take a stronger one.
