Why rent a scooter in Patong

Patong is Phuket’s busiest beach town, and the place where getting around without your own wheels costs the most. Taxis and tuk-tuks are expensive, while the beaches of Karon, Kata and Kamala, the viewpoints and the night markets are 15–40 minutes away. A scooter pays for itself within a couple of trips.

Within Patong it gets you to the malls, the hillside restaurants and quiet coves like Freedom Beach or Tri Trang that taxis rarely go to.

Which scooter suits Patong

Every road out of Patong climbs a steep hill: south to Karon, north towards Kalim and Kamala, east over Patong Hill to Phuket Town. If you ride two-up, choose 150cc or more — the Honda PCX 160 or Yamaha NMAX 155 handle the hills with a passenger.

Riding solo around town, the Honda Click 160 is enough and easier to park in narrow sois. See “Which scooter to choose” for the full comparison.

Roads and parking in Patong

  • Traffic. Thaweewong (the beach road) and Rat-U-Thit jam up in the evening. Use Nanai and Sai Kor roads instead.
  • Bangla Road closes to traffic at night. Park a street away and walk.
  • Parking. Use the marked motorbike bays along the beach and outside the malls. Yellow-white and red-white kerbs mean no parking.
  • Patong Hill is a long, steep climb with tight bends. In the rain, go down slowly using both brakes together.

Rides from Patong

  • Karon and Kata — 15–25 minutes south over the hill, with wider, calmer beaches. See Karon and Kata.
  • Kamala and Surin — 20–30 minutes north on a coastal road with sea views.
  • Phuket Old Town — about 30 minutes over the hill. The Sunday walking street market runs on Thalang Road in the evening.
  • Promthep Cape and Nai Harn — about 45 minutes, the island’s best sunset spot. Route in “Phuket scooter routes”.

Timing and traffic

In the evening the centre of Patong is crowded: the main streets and the area around the malls have dense traffic, many pedestrians and taxis, so for long rides set off before lunch. The calmest time is the morning. At night avoid unfamiliar roads and slow down on descents. The district has many one-way streets: watch the signs and plan your turn in advance.
